How to choose the right T-shirt?

November 7, 2023

The T-shirt, an essential and basic item in any man's or woman's wardrobe, is the simplest and most affordable textile product. Yet this humble T-shirt, an incredibly versatile piece of clothing, started its journey as underwear to protect more valuable garments from sweat, and over time transformed into a fashionable outerwear item.

But how can we choose the right T-shirt from the many different options available? Cut, material composition, collar type, sleeves, stitching, prints - it's hard to navigate through all these choices and determine which style suits you best and which model will best complement your image, depending on the brand and style.

To help you decide, this article will give you some tips on finding the perfect T-shirt.

Different cuts of T-shirts

The way you wear your T-shirt says a lot about you. First, find the right cut and stick to it. A T-shirt that fits you will never go out of fashion. A well-cut shirt is never uncomfortable and should allow you to move easily. The ultimate goal is a comfortable and attractive cut.

Slim fit

This cut fits the body. It's the perfect shirt if you want to show off your silhouette, although a slim fit is not for everyone, but if chosen correctly, it will make you look your best. This cut adds a touch of elegance and glamour.

Classic cut

It's a classic cut that suits most people and works best with any outfit. So, if you're looking for a loose and comfortable cut, the classic T-shirt is a great choice.

Oversize cut

The oversized T-shirt has a loose fit. It is a long T-shirt with shoulder seams that fall down to the arms. The oversize T-shirt is very distinctive and gives a modern, street style look.

What material should a good T-shirt be made of?

Most everyone agrees that 100% cotton is the ideal choice, as it is a natural material that is pleasant on the skin and, as a result, comfortable. However, this label hides a variety of characteristics that can make cotton T-shirts very different from one another.

Pay particular attention to the weight of the material! As well as the composition of the fabric itself, look at the weight of the fabric, which is denoted by GSM (grams per square metre) and is the weight per square metre of the fabric, which simply tells us how compact the T-shirt is.

We advise that the weight of the material is between 150 and 180 GSM. Less is too thin, more is too thick.

A too-thin T-shirt is less pleasant to look at, less pleasant to the touch and more problematic to maintain. It also has a shorter lifespan. On the other hand, a shirt that is too thick can make us feel extra hot and uncomfortable on hot days.

It should also be noted that dyeing the material of a T-shirt adds some extra weight to the fabric, so white T-shirts are often a little lighter than coloured ones.

However, we should not just blindly trust the grammage of a T-shirt, as this information alone does not guarantee that the T-shirt will be exactly what we want it to be. For sure you’ve already noticed in practice that some T-shirts are softer and others are rougher. This difference is caused by the process of making the cotton fibres.

Fabrics used in the manufacture of T-shirts

T-shirts can be made from different fabrics, depending on the intended use and the desired feel on the skin. Some of the most common fabrics used to make T-shirts are:

  • Cotton: a natural fibre that is soft, breathable and comfortable to wear.
  • Polycotton: a combination of cotton and polyester, combining the advantages of both materials.
  • Polyester: a synthetic fibre that is durable, quick-drying and usually wrinkle-free.
  • Viscose: a polysynthetic fibre made from cellulose, which is soft and silky.
  • Modal: A fibre derived from cellulose, similar to viscose but more durable and absorbent.
  • Flax: A natural fibre known for its strength and cooling properties, ideal for the summer months.
  • Bamboo: an eco-friendly fibre that is antimicrobial, absorbent and extremely soft.
  • Micromodal: A version of modal fibre that is even softer and has a silky feel.
  • Nylon: a synthetic fibre that is very durable and elastic.
  • Spandex or elastane: A highly elastic synthetic fibre, usually added to other fabrics for extra stretch.

Each fabric has its own specific properties, making it more or less suitable for certain purposes or climatic conditions.

When choosing the material of a T-shirt, several factors need to be taken into account to ensure comfort, durability and aesthetics. Some of the key factors when choosing a material are:

  • Comfort: the material should feel comfortable against the skin and allow breathability.
  • Absorbency: good T-shirt fabrics absorb sweat and moisture, which is especially important in hot climates or during physical activity.
  • Durability: the fabric chosen must be resistant to abrasion, washing and stretching to maintain its shape and appearance over time.
  • Elasticity: some T-shirts contain elastane or spandex for extra stretch, which ensures a better fit.
  • Maintenance: some materials are easier to care for as they are less wrinkled and easy to wash.
  • Ecological: Natural and organic materials are more environmentally friendly than synthetic fabrics.
  • Price: the quality of a material and its price are often linked, but it is always a good idea to consider the price/quality ratio.
  • Aesthetics: the look and feel of the fabric can affect the overall appearance of the T-shirt, so it is important to choose a fabric that matches your desired style.
  • Thermal insulation: some fabrics, such as linen, are better suited to the warmer months, while others, such as wool, offer better insulation in the colder months.
  • Antimicrobial properties: some fabrics, such as bamboo, have natural antimicrobial properties that prevent odours.

Taking these factors into account, you can choose the most suitable T-shirt material for your needs and ensure that the T-shirt will serve its purpose for a long time.

Different types of T-shirt collars

Once you have chosen the basic elements of the T-shirt, i.e. the cut and the composition of the fabric, you will need to determine one more important element that will add the final touch and largely determine the overall style of your garment: the collar.

Round collar

The round-neck T-shirt is a popular choice for many men and a true classic in the men's wardrobe. It’s simple style is easy to mix and match and fits everyone perfectly.

This V-neck T-shirt brings a fresh twist to a classic style and is relaxed yet elegant. This neckline flatters almost every body shape, as it accentuates and elongates the neck beautifully. For those with a slimmer figure, it can further accentuate their slenderness. A great choice for those looking for a slightly different, yet still sophisticated look!

Polo collar

The polo collar gives a more formal look compared to traditional T-shirts. It originated from tennis equipment, where it was designed to protect players from the sun. Its versatility and comfort have made it popular in sport, work and leisure. This is known as a polo shirt.

So how to choose the perfect T-shirt

You'll feel confident and comfortable in a T-shirt that fits you perfectly. Finding the right one that combines comfort and style is the key to looking stunning. Especially when paired with your favourite jeans or smart trousers, your look becomes truly seductive.

Colours like black, white, grey and dark blue are timeless classics that always complement your style. The classic white T-shirt is versatile and fits into any combination. Dark blue and black T-shirts bring a touch of effortless elegance. For those who want to spice up their style a little, more vibrant colours may also be incorporated.

With all this knowledge about the different types of T-shirts, you can now choose the one that best suits your body and the look you want. And remember, the most important thing is how the T-shirt makes you feel. It doesn't matter if it's fashionable or popular - choose the one that makes you happy, expresses your personality and makes you feel like the best version of yourself. With the right T-shirt, you'll always shine. Good luck shopping!
