Lucky Hank Filmed in Vancouver, Canada

November 13, 2023

The show Lucky Hank, starring Bob Odenkirk (Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul), follows a cranky professor whose midlife crisis sets off ripples of disaster in his life. Filmed in Vancouver, Canada, the series is a mix of comedy and drama. The show premieres on March 19.

After a decade of playing Breaking Bad’s fan favorite Saul Goodman, Odenkirk returns to familiar stomping grounds with AMC’s new comedy-drama, Lucky Hank. The series — a spin-off of Better Call Saul — follows Hank Devereaux, an English department chairman at a badly underfunded college who seems to be having a midlife crisis.

Adapted from Richard Russo’s Straight Man, the show is created by Paul Lieberstein (The Office) and Aaron Zelman (The Killing). Odenkirk stars as Hank Devereaux, a professor going through a midlife crisis at a poorly funded college in rural Pennsylvania. He is surrounded by an interesting cast of characters, including Mireille Enos (The Killing), who plays Hank’s wife Lily, and a number of other series regulars such as Sara Amini, Diedrich Bader, Suzanne Cryer and Cedric Yarbrough.

The show was filmed primarily in Metro Vancouver, with the University of British Columbia serving as “mediocre” Railton College. The production team took great care in selecting locales that would stand in for the fictional campus, which is a mix of rural and urban. For instance, the show’s exterior shots were filmed around the Hennings building at UBC. Several interior scenes were filmed at the Pacific Place mall in downtown Vancouver, while many other locations served as the college’s classrooms and other buildings.
