Signs It's Time to Call a Plumber For Sewer Cleaning

Sewer Cleaning

Most people have been there - the toilet won't flush, or the tub starts to back up. These are telltale signs of a clogged sewer line. Sewer clogs can range from being a gross inconvenience to causing major damage, so it's important to have them addressed quickly by a professional plumber. Here's some signs that it's time to call for sewer cleaning Pittsburgh-based services.

Slow or Gurgling Drains

If you notice your drains are draining slower than usual, or you hear gurgling sounds coming from them, there's likely some type of blockage. When there's a partial clog, your drains will still drain but at a much slower pace. The gurgling noises are water attempting to pass by the clog. Don't ignore slow drains - this problem will likely get worse over time. Call a plumber to clear the clogs before they turn into completely blocked drains.

Backed Up Fixtures

If the water in your sink, shower, or tub is taking forever to drain or is not draining at all, you most likely have a blocked drain line. When this happens, water has nowhere to go and will back up to the lowest point possible. Tubs and sinks overflowing with dirty water are a sure sign you need to call a plumber for drain cleaning as soon as possible. The clog needs to be cleared before water damage occurs.

Multiple Clogged Fixtures

If you have more than one clogged fixture, like a backed up toilet and a tub that won't drain, that indicates the clog is likely further down your main sewer line. When this happens, each fixture drains slowly until the sewer is totally blocked. Then those fixtures will overflow or not drain at all. Never attempt to clear a main sewer clog yourself - call a professional plumber. Main sewer clogs can sometimes require hydro jetting or drain augers to clear fully.

Sewage Smells

Catching a whiff of sewage smells in your bathroom or laundry room means sewer gas is escaping somewhere. The P-traps in drains usually prevent odors from entering homes. But if they have dried out or if there's a clog, gases can vent out. Sewer gas has a very distinct rotten egg or ammonia-like smell. Be sure to call a plumber right away if you ever notice sewage odors as sewer gas can be hazardous to breathe.

Gurgling Sounds from Pipes

Hearing gurgling noises coming from your drain pipes, instead of your sinks or toilet, can indicate a complete clog. When this happens, no water can get through at all. As water hits the clog, air bubbles come up making a gurgling sound. Don't keep using water if your pipes are gurgling - this increases pressure on the clog and can lead to burst pipes or water contamination. Call a plumber immediately to clear a gurgling clog.

Low Toilet Bowl Water Level

Pay attention to the water level in your toilet bowl. If it is lower than normal, that likely means there is a partial blockage in your main sewer line. When this happens, the drain line is so clogged that not enough water can fill the bowl through the refill tube. This is an emergency plumbing situation and needs a service call right away. The longer you wait, the more likely you'll experience sewage backups.

Calling a professional plumber as soon as you notice signs of a clog can help prevent major headaches, damage, and health hazards down the road. Call a professional for sewer cleaning Pittsburgh-located, if you're experiencing one or more of these signs.
