Where is Afterlife Filmed?

Ricky Gervais’s After Life has returned for its third and final series, and fans are eager to know where the show was filmed. Taking place in the fictional town of Tambury, the black comedy-drama explores how we cope with grief and follows newspaper writer Tony Johnson after his wife’s death, where he adopts a new attitude of doing what he wants and speaking his mind.

Filming for the series took place at a variety of locations, with most scenes shot in Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire and North Hampstead on the outskirts of London. The town’s Hertfordshire Railway Station doubled as the Tambury Gazette offices, while the cafe The Coffee Shop and street where Tony lives with his dog Brandy feature. Hemel Hempstead’s Hill Garden and Pergola also features in the series, as does Hampstead Heath and Parliament Hill. Other locations include Camber Sands in East Sussex and Buckinghamshire’s Beaconsfield, where the Old Town registration office was transformed into the Autumnal Leaves care home for Tony’s father Ray.

The iconic firehouse that serves as the setting for the series’ Hook and Ladder Company #8 in Manhattan is actually a Los Angeles studio, but the exterior shots are shot at the Firehouse Museum on Varick Street. The Museum is open to visitors looking for a photo opportunity, and it’s also the perfect place to learn more about what went into making one of the most iconic franchises in cinema history.
