Curb Your Enthusiasm is an American cringe comedy TV series created and starring Seinfeld co-creator Larry David. The HBO improvisational show follows David, who plays a fictionalized version of himself, as he navigates the ups and downs of daily life. The show also stars Cheryl Hines, Jeff Garlin, Susie Essman, and a number of celebrity guest stars.
The series is filmed in Los Angeles and for one season, New York City. Many of the episodes feature locations that will be familiar to Los Angeles locals, such as 553 Moreno Avenue (Larry’s house), 3rd Street Promenade & Broadway (Larry’s office), and South Fair Oaks Avenue & Green Street (Larry’s apartment). However, it is the New York City scenes that offer some of the most intriguing filming locations.
In the New York scenes, viewers can see Larry eating at City Hall Restaurant on 131 Duane Street and playing softball with Rosie O’Donnell on Heckscher Field in Central Park. They can also catch him driving through Manhattan and parking in front of his condominium building, The Milan, at 300 East 55th Street. Or they can see him getting soaked by an unexpected downpour, holding a plastic garment bag over his head with a scowl on his face.
While filming, the cast and crew of the show are free to improvise their lines or create new ones on the fly. They are only limited by the script’s outline, and they can try as many takes as it takes to get a good one. This is how much of the series is truly ad lib, and it is what gives the show its unique humor.
