Where is House of Dragons Filmed?

November 18, 2023

While Game of Thrones is known for its epic landscapes and massive sets, House of Dragons has filmed in a few new spots across the UK and Spain. Taking place 300 years before GOT, the prequel series promises plenty of sex, swords and intrigue as members of House Targaryen wage wars of succession to claim the Iron Throne.

England's stunning Cornwall coast features in House of Dragons, with the cast and crew making use of numerous seaside locations. One of the most notable filming locations is St Michael's Mount, a tidal island castle in the town of Marazion. The castle and church were used as Driftmark in the show, while nearby locations such as Holywell beach and Kynance cove provided backdrops for scenes set in Blackwater Bay.

The Peak District in the north of England also lends itself to the fictional world of George RR Martin with its verdant hills and rocky outcrops. Here, the Peak District team filmed scenes where Princess Rhaenyra and Lord Corlys Velaryon visited their family home in Dragonpit. Other shots were filmed at the cliff-top village of Lloret de Mar in Spain, where the gardens of Santa Clotilde were used to represent Highgarden and an ancient Roman amphitheatre was transformed into a battleground for a tournament.

Of course, Iceland is a favourite location for Game of Thrones and House of Dragons too. The landscape of this country is incredibly diverse, with everything from volcanic islands and black sand beaches to glaciers and waterfalls. The House of Dragons team reportedly used several Icelandic filming locations, including a black-sand beach near Dyrholaey and Skogafoss waterfall for Jon and Ygritte's love scene.
