While a spinoff may not be what some fans of FX’s Justified were hoping for, it’s certainly welcomed. Justified: City Primeval is an eight-episode limited series inspired by the Elmore Leonard crime novel City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit. It takes place seven years after the conclusion of Justified and finds U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens living in Miami, where he balances his life as a marshal and father to his 14-year-old daughter. The series stars Timothy Olyphant, Walton Goggins, Aunjanue Ellis, Adelaide Clemens, Vondie Curtis Hall, Norbert Leo Butz, and Victor Williams, with Olyphant’s real-life daughter Vivian starring as the young Willa.
While Justified’s setting of rural western Kentucky served it well, this new iteration of the show takes Raylan to a whole new world. Filming of Justified: City Primeval shifted from the quaint small towns of Harlan County to Chicago and then Detroit. The move to a big city added a whole new dimension to the series, from flashy casino set designs to action sequences on bustling downtown streets.
The change in scenery also added new depth to the characters that populated the series, including a surprisingly layered addition in Ellis’ Carolyn. It also gave the show a chance to explore race as it pertains to policing in this new locale.
While you may not be able to visit the exact locations where Justified was filmed, it’s still worth checking out the cities and towns that helped bring this series to life.
