The Sandman is a fantasy series based on Neil Gaiman’s comics of the same name published by DC from 1989-1996. The ten-volume series chronicles the adventures of Morpheus, the embodiment of the universe’s Dreaming. Gaiman, along with writer Sam Kieth and artist Mike Dringenberg created a world of characters that spans centuries and explores the interactions between humans and the Endless family of gods and goddesses.
Pivotal portions of the show were filmed across England’s numerous locations including Greater London, Surrey, Dorset and Oxfordshire. For example, Canary Wharf served as a stand-in for New York City while Stag Hill’s Guildford Cathedral stood in for a church seen during the first episode. Also, Surrey’s Shepperton Studios on Studios Road was used as a set for the fictional Cain and Abel manor.
In addition to these major locations, smaller filming took place at a number of other sites. Greenwich’s Painted Hall, which features as the home of the Gods, is a location that has been a stand-in for countless other locations throughout its long history. The site is famous for its regal atmosphere and has had stars like Cary Grant walk its tiled floors.
Another notable locale is Durdle Door on the Lulworth Estate in Dorset, a non-metropolitan county in southwest England that’s known for its stunning coastal views. Additionally, a series of shots were shot at Joyce Grove, a mansion in Nettlebed, Oxfordshire. The property was once the home of occultist Richard Burgess and has appeared in a variety of television shows including Agatha Christie adaptations, Midsomer Murders, Jeeves and Wooster, and The Imitation Game.
