For many chefs, there’s a high that comes with validation -- whether it be awards, a cult following or media write-ups. But when you throw a competition into the wilderness and ask contestants to cook with only what nature provides, that ego takes a beating. That’s the premise behind Chefs vs Wild, a new reality series that premiered Monday. The N&O spoke with the show’s host, Sammy Monsour, a North Carolina native who grew up in Cary and worked at his family’s restaurant in Chapel Hill, ahead of its launch to find out more about the competition.
The chef, along with his or her survivalist guide, scour the land for ingredients including mushrooms, pine needles, sumac and crab apples. During the cooking portion of the challenge, they also have to use only natural forms of heat and manual kitchen tools.
It’s an intense, arduous process that makes for great television, but it’s not without its dangers. The pair face natural elements like wind, rain and freezing temperatures when searching for ingredients and during their time in the shelters they build for themselves.
The series is produced by the same team behind Alone, a similar survival and food show, but it differs in that it pairs a world class chef with a survivalist rather than leaving them to their own devices. The series was filmed throughout two of Canada’s provinces with various locations acting as backdrops, with Calgary Airport serving as JFK and Lynn Valley Park in Vancouver doubling for the entrance to Yosemite.
