How To Protect Outdoor Wood Furniture: Preparing for Winter and Summer

An outdoor space with beautiful outdoor furniture makes you want to relax. You can kick back, open a cold one, and enjoy your little slice of the outdoors with friends and family in comfort.

But outdoor wood furniture needs some extra consideration. It doesn't take long for signs of wear to appear if not properly cared for. Things like splinters, cracks, and even rot will quickly ruin your relaxing outdoor experience.

Preventing damage from occurring doesn't take much. Using simple proper care methods will protect outdoor wood furniture through the seasons.

Paint Protects Outdoor Wood Furniture

Painting your outdoor furnishings is one way to prevent wear and tear. While oil-based paint has been the go-to solution for exterior painting for years, latex paint is more often used these days because it's more durable than it used to be and it's easier to work with than oils. Simply pick a color that matches the color scheme of your outdoor decor.

By painting you protect outdoor wood furniture from damaging UV rays during the summer and moisture damage in the winter. Be aware that paint will require touch-ups every couple of years or so, so if you choose to paint your outdoor furniture, keep that in mind.

Use Sealant to Show Off the Natural Wood Textures

There's a good chance you bought that wood furniture because you fell in love with the beautiful natural wood finish. If this is the case, consider treating outdoor wood furniture with a sealant. Like paint, a quality sealant will protect against moisture damage and some UV rays.

There are a few different kinds of sealant you can choose from depending on your needs. Varnish, lacquer, and polyurethane are all quality options. It's important with sealant to cover every inch of the surface you're applying it to, including underneath and between all the crevices to prevent moisture from sneaking in.

Keep the Elements at Bay

Preventing wear on your outdoor wood furniture by using paint or sealant is a good start, but if you want to ensure that it stands the test of time, you'll want to consider other ways to keep the elements from damaging your outdoor nirvana.

Moving outdoor wood furniture to shaded areas during use in the summer can help prevent sun damage. As the season goes on and areas of shade move, rotate your furniture into those shaded areas to keep it out of the sun as much as possible. You can also opt for using furniture covers when not in use or during bad weather.

As the summer season winds down, do any necessary touch-ups on your outdoor furniture before moving it to its winter storage location. A garage, shed, or basement are all good places to store your furniture during the off-season (as long as the basement is dry).

With a little care, your outdoor wood furniture can be an integral part of a stage that hosts a lifetime of treasured memories with your friends and family.
