How to Protect Your Belongings While Traveling

January 16, 2024

Everyone deserves a relaxing vacation–but when you pack up and leave your home for an extended period of time, you may be putting your belongings at risk if you don’t put the right protections in place. Here are some tips to help you protect the contents of your home while travelling:

Get Renters’ Insurance

Why should you have renters’ insurance? A home insurance policy is a great way to safeguard your belongings because it gives you a financial safety net in case of emergencies. If covered incidents, such as theft, happen while you’re gone, your plan can compensate you for your losses.

Invest in a Safe

While a safe won’t necessarily protect all of your belongings, it will effectively keep valuables out of reach of burglars. A safe may even help to spare your things from common accidents like floods or fires, as some are specifically designed for those situations.

Lock Everything and Collect the Keys

It goes without saying, but it’s still worth a reminder–lock everything. Make sure that all of the entryways to your home are locked before you leave. Don’t forget to lock your windows, storage areas, garages, and vehicles, as well; it may also be helpful to install sensors that will notify you if any of these are opened while you’re away.

Don’t forget to collect all your keys, too, especially spare ones you may have hidden for yourself around the house.

Install a Security System

You can install a smart security system for extra protection that you can customize and track. You can use smart locks, video doorbells, indoor and outdoor cameras, motion-activated lights, and alarms for round-the-clock protection. Should one of these alarms be triggered, authorities will be notified.

Flood-Proof and Fire-Proof Your House

Thieves aren’t the only problem you might encounter at home while on vacation. Floods and fires can significantly damage your home and everything in it.

Make sure to flood-proof and fire-proof your property before leaving. This entails repairing leaks and faulty wires and ensuring that any flood-prevention or smoke alarm systems are working properly. Turn off your water supply and unplug your appliances, too!

Make Your Home Look Lived In

You can ward off robbers by making it seem like your home is occupied while you’re out. This could be as simple as hiring a regular landscaping service or having a neighbour or relative park in your driveway. It’s also a good idea to leave a few lights on!

Hire a House Sitter

Have someone you trust stay in your home while you’re away. They can tidy up and take care of plants and pets, as well! If you don’t have anyone to leave your home to, there are services available to help you find a reliable house sitter.

Final Thoughts

Enjoy your vacation to the fullest by making sure the fort is held down safely with these tips on how to protect your belongings while you’re away!
