What Is The Dennis Severs' House?

February 19, 2024

Dennis Severs was born in California on November 16, 1948. He grew up with an unexplained wonderment of London, and history. He ended up taking this interest and making it his life. Not only did he drop out of law school, but he also started dressing in 18th and 19th century fashions. He also started to drive a horse-drawn carriage. In the 1960s he left California and moved to London. He purchased a home that was built in the 1700s, and quite literally falling apart. Fixing up the home, but without modernizing it, Severs created a world of imagination. Inside the home he lived as one would hundreds of years ago. Cooking meals over the fireplace, and lighting the home with candles. He even opened the home to tour groups, and would always speak as if he were  in a different time. On December 27, 1999 Severs passed away, although his home is still open to the public. Step back in time and take a look at the Dennis Severs' House below.

What Is The Dennis Severs’ House?

The Dennis Severs House is a magical home set back in time. It belonged to Dennis Severs, who lived there from 1979 until his death in 1999. Much like Severs himself, the home was decorated as if it belonged over 100 years ago. Not only with the furnishings, but with the lack of plumbing and electricity as well. In fact, Dennis would often open his home to small groups to tour inside and see how he lives.

Architectural Design

The architecture is that of a Georgian terraced house, and is located in Folgate Street, London. Dating back to 1724 and featuring brown and brick dressings, with a black door and red shutters. There are four stories, including a basement. In 1979 the house was in poor condition and risked being torn down, only to be saved by the  Spitalfields Historic Buildings Trust.

Inside The Home

There are ten rooms inside this house, all of which are decorated in various historic time periods. Unlike most historic museums, each room in this home is set up as if someone is still living there. From an unmade bed, to half eaten bread. Severs' own bedroom consisted of a four poster bed made of pallets and polystyrene. Because the house is set up with multiple time periods, it has been described as "a three-dimensional historical novel, written in brick and candlelight".
