5 Of The Best Low Maintenance Shrubs To Use in Landscaping

April 20, 2024

Have you recently bought a home and want to engage in some landscape gardening?

Becoming popular in the 18th Century, landscape gardens moved from palaces, down to large estates, all the way down to smaller homes and, in 2024, they are still popular. When fitted properly, they can add value to any property, and they can also provide a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Of course, for people who are older or may have less mobility, it can be worth looking into having a garden landscaped. This will make any outdoor space easier to maintain while also making the area look more appealing.

So, if you want to plant some low-maintenance plants or shrubs in your landscape garden, read on here, the top 5 appealing plants will be looked at.

1. Hydrangea

Native to Asia and America, the hydrangea is found around cliffs and seeps.

Hydrangeas are hardy, easy to care for and come in a range of colours from blue, to pink and even bright white. You can, of course, get some hydrangeas in mixed colors, making them ideal if you want to create a rainbow garden. If you opt for garden landscaping at rightscapes.co.uk, you will need to discuss the use of hydrangeas in the design, as they can develop deep roots, which may cause erosion of surrounding rock beds.

2. Lavender

Another plant that explodes with color come summer and is a literal magnet for bees and butterflies is lavender.

It smells great, is easy to care for, can be used in cooking and, of course, it is native to mountains or rocky parts of the Mediterranean. There are different types to choose from too, with many people who want to use it in landscaping opting for larger, English lavender.

3. Landscape Rose

Few people want a landscaped garden to go bare in Autumn. A bare garden can look depressing! So, if you are looking for a plant that looks and smells stunning, while also flowering generously even in the cooler months, then you will want to look into having landscape roses placed around your landscaped garden. Please note that they do love full sun, but can bloom relatively well in light shade.

To get the most out of landscape roses, you should also deadhead them to boost flowering.

4. Catmint

Looking a lot like lavender, catmint is a perfect addition to any landscaped garden. Also, much like lavender, pollinators love this plant! Catmint loves full sun to light shade and, while it does need to be pruned back to keep it growing, it has some truly stunning indigo or pale blue flowers. It requires very little watering and, if cared for properly, can expand and create a perfect top-up spot for bees and butterflies.

5. Geranium

When planted as part of a landscape garden, geraniums are exceedingly easy to look after.

Much like other plants that do well in landscaped gardens, geraniums come in red, pink and even yellow, making them an eye-catching addition to any outdoor space. You will need to deadhead the flowers when they die to promote growth. You don’t need to water them much, unless it is summer and, for maximum florals, be sure to place them somewhere sunny!
