5 Things Dragon’s Dogma 2 Gets Right

April 16, 2024

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is the latest action RPG to release in 2024, and comes from Capcom – for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series S/X. The game has been received well both by critics and gamers alike, and we think we know the reasons why. Read on for our take on 5 things that Dragon’s Dogma 2 gets right in the action RPG genre.

Exploration

By far the biggest draw that is attracting players to the world of Dragon’s Dogma 2 is exploration. Once you move out from the safety of the villages and towns and other settlements – you never know what you are going to run into. And, in a genre where map -markers have made the RPG genre more of a checklist exercise, this brings the thrill back into exploration, something that has been sorely missing.

Builds

Dragon’s Dogma 2 boasts of a good number of vocations – the game’s name for character classes. Each one is well differentiated, thus ensuring that starting over for a new game makes it feel sufficiently different. Also, at the same time – it also ensures and encourages experimentation by allowing players to switch from one vocation to the other in the same game.

Combat

This being an action RPG, the combat has to shine – and it does, brilliantly. Whether you are running into the battle with a greatsword, or dishing out crazy damage from some visually striking spells, or using the twinblades to land quick and devastating combos on the enemy – the combat is fresh, fun and just feels tight and responsive.

Single-player and Pawns System

The Pawns system bring a nice, different twist to the single-player experience : a constant companion with whom you can exchange high-fives after a tough battle – and also someone you can import from other players – bringing along his experiences there, into your game – for e.g.; pointing out where a treasure chest is to you, if the pawn had completed that part in the other game. Thus, it is kind of best of both worlds : you get a single player experience, but also share that with a pawn

Story and World-building

The game does a great job right from the get go, as your heart is torn from you by a dragon – and inspite of that you survive. The story is also sufficiently rich enough to keep you driven for the duration of the game. The world also feels rich, detailed and organic – as do the different quests and NPCs that you come across.

If you are looking to get the best of everything, you may want to check out GamesHorizon – it has detailed guides on side quests, NPC interactions, weapon and vocation unlocks – and can be the perfect guide as you explore the world of Dragon’s Dogma 2.
