Do I Need to Change Locks on New House?

When buying a new house, you undoubtedly may be overwhelmed by paperwork and preparing for a move. However, there are essential steps to take before your move-in date arrives. While you are connecting utilities and setting up internet service in your new home, you should also schedule locksmith service to change locks on new houses. Why should you change locks when you buy a house?

Copies of the Keys

Often, people pass out keys to their house to various friends and family members over the years. For example, they may hang out a house key to someone watching their house while they are on an extended vacation. Maybe several nearby family members have a copy of the key in case of an emergency. In some cases, the seller did not change the locks when he or she bought the house years ago. Some homes have been used by renters, and there could be a considerable number of keys from previous occupants and those who they passed out to other people. When you purchase a house, the seller gives you the keys in their possession, but these may not be all of the keys floating around. The last thing that you want is for someone else to have a key to your home. Changing the keys ensures that only you and those who you grant access to have a key.

Lost Keys

While the various house keys that the seller passed out over the years can be problematic if you do not change the locks, there are other concerns. For example, the homeowner or someone else who had a key to the front door may have lost the keys. While many of the people who have intentionally been given a key may be aware of the seller’s relocation and may toss out the house key, there could be other people with a key and with ill intentions for theft, property damage and other issues. You cannot assume that the previous owner changed the locks after losing the keys.

Greater Security

Many sellers have resided in their homes for years, and they may have never changed the locks. Lock technology has improved over the years, which means that modern locks do a better job of securing your house. Even if the seller changed the locks within the last few years, the seller may have chosen a low-quality lock that is easy for an intruder to bypass. When you change locks on a new house, you can choose more secure locks that do a better job of keeping unwanted visitors out of your space.
