Early Life

Born on January 24, 1999, in Montgomery, Alabama, Henry Ruggs III attended Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School. During his time there, he excelled in football, basketball, and track. Ruggs was highly recruited for college football and eventually committed to the University of Alabama.

College Career

At the University of Alabama, Ruggs was a prolific receiver and started for three years. As a freshman in 2017, he recorded 12 catches for 229 yards and six touchdowns. His sophomore year in 2018 saw him with 46 catches for 741 yards and 11 touchdowns. In his junior year in 2019, he tallied 40 catches for 746 yards and seven touchdowns, alongside 17 punt returns for 264 yards and one touchdown. Ruggs was a consensus All-American and SEC Offensive Player of the Year in 2019 and was part of the team that won the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship.

NFL Career

Ruggs was drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders as the 12th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. In his rookie season, he recorded 46 catches for 703 yards and four touchdowns and made 11 punt returns for 159 yards. In his second season, he played 10 games, making 24 catches for 452 yards and two touchdowns until his career was abruptly cut short by a car crash.

2021 Car Crash

On November 2, 2021, Ruggs was involved in a tragic car crash, driving his Corvette at over 150 mph and colliding with Tina Tintor's car, resulting in her death and the death of her dog. Ruggs was arrested for DUI resulting in death and reckless driving and was released by the Raiders the same day.

Legal Consequences and Sentence

Ruggs pleaded guilty to felony DUI resulting in death and misdemeanor manslaughter in February 2023. On August 9, 2023, he was sentenced to 3-10 years in prison, marking a dramatic downturn in his career and life.
