May 19, 2024

Hunter Biden, born on February 4, 1970, in Wilmington, Delaware, has lived a life marked by both personal tragedy and professional success. Both he and his brother Beau were seriously injured in a 1972 car crash that claimed the lives of their mother and younger sister. Hunter's early education saw him attend Archmere Academy, a Catholic high school, followed by Georgetown University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in history in 1992. He married Kathleen Buhle in 1993 and later attended Yale Law School, graduating in 1996.

Early Career

Initial Professional Roles

Hunter's early career included working at MBNA, a major donor to his father's campaigns, where he rose to the position of executive vice president by 1998. He also worked for the U.S. Department of Commerce focusing on e-commerce policy and co-founded the lobbying firm Oldaker, Biden & Belair. His consulting role at MBNA continued until 2005 before serving on the board of Amtrak from 2006 to 2009.

Business Ventures

Investment Firms and Lobbying

In 2006, Hunter co-purchased Paradigm Global Advisors, which wound down by 2010. He later founded Seneca Global Advisors in 2008 and Rosemont Seneca Partners in 2009. He also co-founded the venture capital firm Eudora Global. His board membership with Chinese investment company BHR Partners from 2013 to 2020 attracted controversy, though claims of corruption were later debunked.

Burisma Holdings

From 2014 to 2019, Hunter served on the board of Burisma Holdings, receiving up to $50,000 per month. Despite accusations of a conflict of interest involving his father's political position, these claims were found to be baseless.

Legal and Tax Problems

Since 2018, Hunter has been under federal investigation for his tax affairs. He pled not guilty to tax charges in July 2023 and was indicted on firearms-related charges in September 2023. Additional tax-related indictments followed in December 2023, to which he also pled not guilty.

Laptop Controversy

An October 2020 New York Post article alleged corruption based on contents from Hunter's laptop, sparking a debate over its authenticity. Although some emails were authenticated, no evidence of wrongdoing by Joe Biden emerged.

Substance Abuse Struggles

Hunter has a long history of drug and alcohol abuse, exacerbated by family tragedies such as the deaths of his mother and brother. He has undergone numerous rehabilitation programs over the years.

Personal Life

Hunter has had a tumultuous personal life, including a divorce in 2017, a relationship with his brother's widow Hallie Biden, and a paternity-confirmed fourth daughter with Lunden Alexis Roberts. He married Melissa Cohen in 2019, with whom he has a son named Beau.

Other Ventures

Navy Reserve

Hunter’s brief stint with the Navy Reserve ended with a failed drug test shortly after commissioning.

Art Career

Recently, Hunter has ventured into art, selling paintings for up to $500,000, which has drawn scrutiny over potential conflicts of interest.

In April 2021, Hunter released his memoir, "Beautiful Things," which details his family tragedies and struggles with addiction. The book received mixed reviews but was noted for its emotional depth.

Key Themes

Hunter's life and career are deeply interconnected with the Biden family legacy, leading to frequent accusations of nepotism. His name often surfaces in controversies, whether related to business dealings or personal issues. However, his story also portrays a narrative of resilience in the face of personal struggles and immense family loss.
