most dangerous cities in Rhode Island

While Rhode Island is known for its picturesque landscapes and rich history, some cities face higher crime rates than others. Based on data from the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program, we have compiled a list of the five most dangerous cities in Rhode Island, ranked from the fifth to the first.

5. Newport

Newport, despite its relatively small population of around 24,000, ranks as one of the most dangerous cities in Rhode Island. The probability of becoming a victim of a violent crime here stands at 1 in 258, while the chances of experiencing property crime are 1 in 33. In 2015, the city reported 727 property crimes, with thefts constituting the majority (551 thefts). Though there have been recent improvements in the crime rate, Newport remains a high-risk area due to its significant number of property crimes.

4. Pawtucket

Pawtucket, home to over 71,000 residents, has a lower violent crime rate compared to other cities on this list, with a probability of 1 in 244 of becoming a victim of violent crime. However, property crimes are quite prevalent, with a 1 in 38 chance of being affected. Notably, there has been a decline in violent crime since 2013, but property crime rates remain similar to those in Newport, keeping Pawtucket high on the danger list.

3. Woonsocket

Woonsocket, the sixth-largest city in Rhode Island, shares a similar risk to Providence in terms of violent crime, with a 1 in 176 chance of victimization. Its violent crime rate is 53% higher than the national average. Property crimes are also common, with a 1 in 45 chance of being affected. Nonetheless, the incidence of theft and burglary has slightly declined in recent years, but Woonsocket still remains a critical area concerned with high crime rates.

2. Providence

As the largest city in Rhode Island, Providence holds the highest rate of property crime and the second highest rate of violent crime in the state. The odds of being a victim of violent crime here are 1 in 176, and for property crime, the odds increase to 1 in 29. The overall crime rate is 38% higher than the national average and 85% higher than the Rhode Island state average. Common criminal activities include domestic violence, assault, theft, and burglary, making Providence a high-risk city.

1. Central Falls

Central Falls is noted for having the highest population density in Rhode Island and a high violent crime rate, with a 1 in 129 chance of becoming a victim. While the property crime rate is lower compared to other dangerous cities, standing at a probability of 1 in 56, notable incidents of domestic violence, including two deaths in the past ten years, spotlight its precarious safety situation. The combination of these factors positions Central Falls as the most dangerous city in Rhode Island.

City Population Violent Crime Rate (per capita) Property Crime Rate (per capita)
Newport 24,000 1 in 258 1 in 33
Pawtucket 71,000 1 in 244 1 in 38
Woonsocket 41,000 1 in 176 1 in 45
Providence 179,000 1 in 176 1 in 29
Central Falls 19,000 1 in 129 1 in 56
