Summer Activities to Do with Your Dog

May 2, 2024

Long summer days are perfect for spending time outdoors and having fun with your dog. Warm weather is great for getting active or relaxing. Pack treats and water and find inspiration to have a blast this summer with your dog.

Have a Pool Day

Beat the summer heat with a pool day. Set up a kiddie pool with a few inches of water or a sprinkler, depending on what your dog is into. Experienced swimmers will enjoy a beach or a large body of water where they can actually doggy paddle. Pack a tennis ball or floaty toy, especially if your dog likes to retrieve. Bring a towel or two for when you get out of the water.

Make sure your destination is dog-friendly before taking a dip. Swimming is a full-body and tiring activity, so plan breaks or get your pet out of the water when they show signs of being tired.

Summertime Treats

Share a summer treat with your pup. Fruits like watermelon, cantaloupe, blueberries, strawberries, and apples are safe for pets. If you want ice cream on a hot day, get your dog a pup cup or dog-friendly ice cream. Regular ice cream, intended for humans, is not a good choice for dogs. The sugar content is too high, and flavors with chocolate can be harmful. Even some varieties of frozen yogurt have more sugar than is suitable for dogs.

Bark in the Park

Check if any nearby baseball teams host dog-friendly games; most teams from major league down to single-A host bark in the park games. Watching a baseball game in person is a classic summer activity, and enjoying a game with your dog makes the experience even more fun.

The game action, crowds, and other dogs may be a lot to handle, so consider taking your dog for a walk earlier in the day to tire them out. You don't want to exhaust your pup, but just burn off some energy so they can handle the activity.

Find a New Hobby

Dog sports are an excellent way for you and your dog to have fun together while also getting your pup exercise and mental stimulation. Look for local clubs or events to learn more and get started. Dock diving and agility are traditional and well-known dog sports, but also consider bikejoring, barn hunt, lure coursing, or fast CAT. Many dog sports initially started to support specific breads, so you can find a sport that aligns with your pet's bread or try something different.

Hit the Trails

Hit up a favorite trail or find a new walk to enjoy with your dog. Select a walk that fits your activity level, whether a mountainous hike, a flat stroll through a different area of your neighborhood, or a park you haven't visited before.

Time your trek for early or late in the day when the temperatures are cooler, and remember to bring water and a bowl so you and your dog can have a drink.

Spa Day

Help your dog stay cool when the temperature rises with a spa day. Long-haired breeds or dogs with multiple coats may appreciate a haircut during the warmer months. Arrange to bring your dog to a groomer or have an at-home haircut. Brush your dog to remove loose fur, and consider a bath. Baths are not fun for many dogs, but they may appreciate how much better they feel afterward.
