June 21, 2024

Bangkok is a city like no other, a sprawling metropolis that is home to more than 15 million people and this amazing place is home to many unique landmarks and features. If you are going to spend a few days in the City of Angels, here are some unique local attractions to add to your itinerary.

  1. Khao San Road – Known as the centre of the Bangkok nightlife scene, this small street in the Banglampu District and is home to many bars, clubs and small restaurants. If, for example, you are travelling alone and you would like to meet like-minded solo travellers, spend an evening in Khao San Road and you are sure to connect with fellow backpackers. Stay in a hotel near Bitec and you are not far from the main exhibition centre, where you can watch pop concerts.
  2. Chatuchak Weekend Market – The largest weekend market in Bangkok, Chatuchak market is the place to buy all your souvenirs. Bangkokians frequent this market as prices are reasonable, plus you can barter in this huge complex of stalls. They sell absolutely everything (including pets); you can even order mahogany furniture and it will be shipped to your home address. Try to work it that you have a weekend free in Bangkok at the end of your holiday and you won’t regret it.
  3. Papaya Studio – One of the craziest stores you will ever encounter, Papaya Studio is located in Soi Lad Prao 55 and the owner has spent the last 25 years collecting weird things. Not everything in the store is for sale and store visitors are advised to take a photo of the item you are interested in and show it to a staff member. Only then will you discover whether or not the item is up for sale. If you are planning to visit Phuket, read this short blog about a cool coffee shop.
  4. Bangkok National Museum – Located in Phra Nakorn District, Bangkok National Museum is home to one of the best fine arts collections in Southeast Asia. There are English-speaking guides to inform you of the unique treasures housed in the museum and you can easily spend a whole day admiring the fine art.
  5. Erawan Shrine – Thailand is 90% Buddhist and the Erawan Shrine is used by thousands of Thais to make merit; a highly revered monument to the Lord Buddha, the shrine sits on a major road intersection and early mornings see many white-collar Thais paying their respects to Buddha. The sweet aroma of incense sticks fills the air and when you are at this location, don’t be surprised if a feeling of calmness and tranquillity overcomes you. Every taxi driver knows where the Erawan Shrine is located, or you could get there with Skytrain.
