A quick guide to planning for your hiking trip

June 24, 2024

So you’ve booked your hiking trip, like this Coastal Camino de Santiago from Porto, now is time to get ready and prepare yourself for the exciting adventure that you are soon to go on. Getting organised and prepared as soon as possible is the key to a successful hike - from the moment you booked your trip (this could be many months before) to the days approaching, there is always something you can do to make the trip that little easier for you.

From the fitness program, you can start many months before, to ensure you have the correct insurance for while you are away, there is plenty to get busy with. To help you with your preparation, below we have put together our guide on planning for your hiking trip.

Fitness Program

Hikes can vary in difficulty - the duration can change, the terrain can be varied and the incline you are hiking can be challenging. Depending on the hike you are deciding to take on, will decide the type of fitness program you should do. As you can imagine, the harder the hike, the sooner you want to start your training and the more specific this training may be. The better your overall fitness level is, the more enjoyable a hike will be, so it’s worth focusing on your fitness as soon as you’ve booked your hike.

We’ve all heard the saying fail to prepare, prepare to fail - this couldn’t be any more true for a hiking trip! To make your hiking trip safe and more enjoyable, it’s important that you do some research on the route you are going to take. Dedicate some time to learning about the challenges you are going to face as well as any moments which you don’t want to miss out on - for example, if there are any stunning waterfalls that you should detour in order to see. You also want to prepare for all climate possibilities, as there is nothing worse than it raining and you do not have the correct attire.

This one is a boring point, but it is very important - have you taken out the correct insurance for your hiking trip? Just like a normal holiday, you want to make sure you have travel insurance, but you may also want to ensure you have additional protection, such as gadget cover or dedicated trekking and hiking insurance. Quick tip, when looking into insurance products, always run multiple quotes on different sites, you’ll often find sites offering insurance from the same company but cheaper. Before accepting a quote, double-check the company's reputation, Trust Pilot is a great place to look, when looking for customer opinions on a company.

We hope the above guide has given you a start to planning for your hiking trip. Where are you going to be going for your hiking trip? How long is your trip booked for? Have you got any tips to help our readers who are looking to get into hiking? Let us know in the comment box below.
