Combine your Lounge and Garden by Installing Bespoke Double-Glazed Sliding Doors

June 24, 2024

The great Australian summer is only a few months away and as we move out of our winter, now is the perfect time to review your outdoor living space. Most Aussie properties have a dining room window that looks out onto the garden and this can be removed, along with most of the brickwork, then you can install a set of made-to-measure double glazed sliding doors.

Building support

It is necessary to fit a strong lintel to support the wall now that the brickwork has been removed; this is something the sliding glass door supplier handles, along with the plastering and making good. They even install an insect screen that slides on an extra track to keep the flies out. Frames are normally made from anodised aluminium or uPVC, whichever you prefer, with a diverse selection of colours to blend perfectly with the surroundings. You can’t simply knock down a wall, you first need to check whether or not it is a load-bearing wall. If it is, then the lintel must be installed before removing the wall.

Two, three or four panel designs

Of course, it all depends on the size of your lounge/dining room and how much of the rear wall you plan to turn into glass. A popular design is a 4-panel section with the two middle doors sliding outward, which really does bring your lounge into the garden. Special toughened glass ensures safety and hermetically sealed double-glazed units mean zero condensation. Click here for a few DIY tips.

Choosing a supplier

Of course, there are quite a few glazing companies that supply & install double-glazed sliding doors; we recommend inviting two or three to quote for the project, then you are in a position to make an informed decision. It might not be a good idea to be too price focused, as the quality of the materials may differ, while you should go with your inner feeling regarding which supplier to choose.

Window replacement

Most homeowners choose to replace all their windows when looking to add a sliding patio door; using the same styles adds some uniformity and your energy bills will reflect that fact that your home is well-insulated. Double glazing adds an extra level of security to your home, as well as boosting the value of the property.

Now is the perfect time to think about turning your outdoor living space into an area that is ideal for entertaining. If your garden furniture is looking a little jaded, why not visit your local garden centre and choose something suitable? A couple of cantilever umbrellas are perfect for shading, as they are easy to move and are very stable. Home improvements add value to a property and if you plan one project every year, your investment will appreciate over the years.
