Where does Stewart Lane live?

Stewart Lane has spent summers with his wife and five children in one of the thirty homes in the exclusive, eco friendly Grace Estate in East Hampton, New York since 2003. His home fondly named “Dancing Oaks” after the many tall trees in the area is an eight thousand plus square foot stucco house with eight bedrooms and nine bathrooms in the three-story main house and an additional two guest cottages that are situated poolside.

The Grace Estate which encompasses 623 acres of protected unspoiled beachfront, upland forest, tidal, and freshwater wetlands in East Hampton. This pristine coastal wilderness helps safeguard Northwest Harbor, one of the Atlantic Seaboard's most productive shell and finfish breeding grounds. The heavily wooded area and large lot sizes ensure the ultimate privacy from one estate to the next. In 1985 the Town of East Hampton embarked on one of the most successful land preservation acts in the northeast. In 1981 a developer bought the large land parcel with the plan to create a condo complex of five hundred plus luxury condominiums. After years of debate, it was agreed that thirty individual house parcels on one hundred acres would be allotted for building and the remaining five hundred acres would remain as a publicly protected nature preserve. The area quickly reached its limit of houses so they are in constant demand. Housing size is restricted to protect the environment, landscaping is regulated to safeguard the area, and most homes have small mowed lawns and seventy-five percent or more of Indigenous trees on the property, unlike other affluent neighborhoods which deplete water supply and produce excess nitrogen to the area. The ecological and historical importance of the Grace Estate and the efforts undertaken to preserve it are an inspiring success story of how a large tract of land can be planned and maintained for future generations. Many of the houses remain with the original owners; with limited supply and slow turnover, the homes retain high value, usually upward of eight million dollars.

The elegant stucco house is reached by a long driveway that splits into two separate gravel driveways; one leading to the three-car garage and the other to the double-door main entrance. The grand two-story entrance features a view through to the slate terrace and a curved staircase to the second floor. The impressive living room opens onto a slate terrace, formal dining room, and screened garden room. There is a huge family room.

The first-floor primary wing features a spacious bathroom with a separate private toilet closet, a large jacuzzi tub, a double shower stall with six shower heads, and spray features in a glass enclosure. The first-floor primary bedroom, also, has a sitting room with a gas fireplace, walk-in closet, and terrace.

The oversized chef’s kitchen includes granite counters, a large center island, a wine cooler, double sinks, tap fed hot water dispenser, an abundance of cabinets for storage, state-of-the-art appliances, two dishwashers, and a separate pantry with an additional refrigerator, washer & dryer, pan and small appliance storage shelving.

The second story features four ensuite bedrooms, marble bathrooms, and a spacious family room with a fireplace overlooking a double-height foyer. An additional wing comprises a three-bedroom suite perfect for guests.

The fully finished basement has a family sitting area, a screening room, a gym, a wine cellar, and a massive owner storage closet.

The four-acre property has a tennis court, and a heated gunite pool, and a spa designed to blend into the natural environment (and therefore has been mistaken for a pond!) complete with a pair of spouting cranes fountain feature and a stone waterfall. Two small guest cottages sit by the pool with views of the spa, refrigerator, dishwasher, washer and dryer, and an outdoor shower. There is a wall of twelve-foot+ rhododendrons, mature forsythias, lilacs, Rose of Sharon, butterfly bushes, crepe myrtle, and a berm of hydrangeas. The plants and shrubs added to the landscape were designed to have a view of constantly blooming flowers from spring through fall. Three plus of the four acres of the land is covered in indigenous plants and trees providing constant and consistent food and protection for the area's many species of birds and wildlife.
