Taking a Winter Holiday in Phuket – Top Tips for a Memorable Experience

June 21, 2024

If you hate the freezing mornings in Europe and you are looking to escape the sub-zero temperatures, you couldn’t find a better holiday destination than sunny Phuket. The European winter and the Thai winters contrast greatly, with minimum temperatures of 18C and zero chance of rain!

If you are already convinced that Phuket is the place to go, here are a few tips to make your holiday experience a memorable one.

  • Sun protection – If you are coming from a cold European winter and you have a fair-skin complexion, be very careful with exposure to the sun; coastal breeze disguises the heat and by the time you realise, the damage is done. The simple fact is, a bad case of sunburn will ruin your holiday, so buy some high factor sunscreen and limit exposure.
  • Accommodation – Staying at one of the 5 star hotels in Patong Phuket is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and the all-inclusive price allows you to pamper yourself. When you stay at a 5-star hotel, everything is taken care of, leaving you to live like a millionaire. There are stunning beach resorts along the long coastline and Google can help you find the best deal.
  • Spending money – If you are planning to withdraw Thai baht from an ATM using your credit card, there is a change of several dollars every time you use it. We advise you to exchange money at a leading currency exchange booth in Bangkok, where you get the best rates. SuperRich tend to offer the best rates and they have booths all over the city.
  • Take care with valuables – If you are staying at a 5-star hotel, you will have a small safe in your suite and we advise you to store cash, jewellery, cameras, passports and tickets in your safe. Thailand is one of the safest countries in the world, that said, you should always keep an eye out for anything out of the ordinary and avoid going to dark place alone. • Learning the basics of the Thai language – If you’re coming for a few weeks, you should know numbers up to 100,000 and a few basic phrases; you can sign up for an online Thai language class and when you arrive in Thailand, you will already have a foundation. The Thai people are very warm and welcoming and they celebrate Buddhist festivals throughout the year. Thai is different to most languages in as much as words are joined together, with only sentences separated by a space. On the positive side, there is no grammar with Thai, time words indicate when the event occurred, yet Thai is a tonal language, with 5 tones.

Do make a point of drinking at least 8 glasses of water during the day; it is very easy to become dehydrated in a tropical country and do take out comprehensive health insurance, because treatment can be expensive. Click here for a free trip planner to help you create a schedule.
